STORY-DRIVEN 2D ADVENTURES

More than reading.
Explore. Interact.

From a fireside conversation to an investigation in an unfamiliar city. Combine dialogue, exploration and cinematic sequences to suit your game.

01

Point-and-click adventures

Object inspection, inventory and reactions to player actions. Story events determine which locations can be reached.

02

Detective stories

Clues, observations and deductions. A discovery becomes a conversation topic, and new information changes the investigation.

03

Visual novels

Characters, branching dialogue and decisions with consequences. Add exploration or keep the focus on the narrative.

AN EXAMPLE STORY SEQUENCE

One discovery changes the way forward.

  1. Discover

The player inspects a desk and picks up a key.

    Inspection + inventory
  2. Use

The key opens a drawer. Inside is a note.

    Item + reaction
  3. Ask

Finding the note unlocks a new question in a conversation.

    Discovery + dialogue condition
  4. Go further

The answer makes a new address available on the map.

    Event + story map

The author defines these links through conditions and actions. This illustrates how the engine systems connect, not a separate included game.

VISUAL EDITOR

From a location
to an interaction.

Place objects, define reactions and connect them to the story. Dialogue, inventory, discoveries and story conditions share one project. Configure the core actions without code.

Your backgrounds, characters and props. Place, resize and layer them on the canvas.

02

Connect

Dialogue, choices and object reactions. Build the rules behind your story.

03

Test inside the editor, then export a standalone Windows game for your players.

ATMOSPHERE

One scene.
A different feeling.

Make light and weather part of the story. Illuminate a detail, let the fog roll in or leave your character out in the rain.

DIRECTION

The right moment.
The right frame.

A wide shot. A glance. A detail. Save camera shots and connect camera moves, dialogue, pauses and fades in a staged sequence.

A saved camera view of the TROK ENGINE demonstration scene.

Scene-render recording. The smooth camera transition and rain use the engine’s own systems.

GAME INTERFACE

Your game.
Your visual language.

Menus, dialogue, journals and saves in one visual language. Customize layouts, add your fonts, icons and artwork. Keep your styling in a .trokpack.

STORY SYSTEMS

The systems behind your adventure.

01Choices that stay with you.

Branching conversations, flags, relationships and stats. Let a decision change more than the next line.

  • Story maps with conditional travel
  • Nested dreams and temporary story contexts
  • Selected memories carried back to the main story
02A room worth investigating.

Give props a purpose. Inspect details, use inventory items and let a discovery unlock a conversation.

  • Close-up inspection, clues and puzzles
  • Journal, dossiers and phone conversations
  • Brief thoughts in the scene without stopping play
03Direct the moment.

Save a camera angle, move into a close-up, hold a pause and hand control back to the player.

  • Named camera shots and staged scene events
  • Conversations, fades and motions in one sequence
  • Looped motions and event-driven frame animation
04Let the world breathe.

Light your backgrounds and props, put a flashlight in the player's hands and change how a place feels.

  • Normal maps, materials, ordinary and UV light
  • Rain, snow, floating dust and soft-edged fog
  • Layered depth and sound-perception presets
05Your game. Your visual language.

Give menus, dialogue and journals a consistent style. Bring your own fonts, icons, cursors and interface artwork.

  • Layouts for HUD, menus, inventory and journal
  • Style settings across the other game screens
  • Reusable .trokpack interface packs
06Build. Check. Keep going.

Jump into a scene with an author test state, check story routes and replace artwork without rebuilding its behaviour.

  • Test progress separate from player saves
  • External resource folders and usage references
  • Standalone Windows export with saves and settings

TROK focuses on story-driven 2D adventures, exploration and cinematic direction. It is not an all-genre or 3D engine. Free layout is available on supported screens; other screens use style settings.

BEFORE YOU BEGIN

A few good questions.

Ask the developer
What does optional support include?

Any successful payment on the official TROK ENGINE itch.io product page before 1.0 gives you Full 1.0 at no extra cost. Keep your itch.io receipt or download key. A free download alone does not grant Full 1.0. Payments elsewhere and asset packs are not part of this offer.

Can I sell games made with Preview?

Yes, without engine royalties. The Preview terms permit distributing the runtime as part of your games, but not reselling the editor. Rights to third-party images, music, fonts and packs must be checked separately.

What happens to my Preview after 1.0?

It keeps working without payment or expiry. You can keep creating and releasing games with your downloaded 0.x build. Keep its archive, your .novel and .novel.resources together; future updates and old hosted downloads are not guaranteed.

Do I need to know how to code?

Not for the core workflow: scenes, dialogue, choices, conditions and ready-made actions are configured visually. TROK is a focused 2D storytelling tool, not a general-purpose scripting or 3D engine.

Where can I run the editor and my game?

The current editor and standalone game export are for Windows x64. Your players do not need TROK ENGINE. Browser, macOS, Linux and mobile exports are not offered in this release.

Does it work offline?

Yes. Authoring and playing an exported game do not require an AI service or a cloud account. Download the editor, extract the complete archive and work locally.

Can I use my own art and interface?

Yes. Import your backgrounds, characters, props, animation frames and audio. Customize supported layouts and screen styles with your fonts, icons and artwork. You are responsible for the rights to the assets you use.

Which languages are supported?

The editor and built-in game interface support English, Ukrainian and Russian. You write your story in the language you choose; the engine does not automatically translate story text.

Is 0.57 a finished 1.0 release?

No. The engine is actively developing. Keep project backups, use the story checks and test the exported game on your target machine. The handbook describes current features, not a guarantee that every possible project is bug-free.

How do I report a bug?

Email max.trokay@gmail.com with the version, build edition, Windows version, numbered steps, expected result and actual result. Say whether it happens in the editor, preview or exported game. Share only a minimal project you have permission to send.
